Winona Brummet Obituary

Winona Mae Wickham Brummet was  born April 1, 1924 in Long Beach, CA to John and Marjorie Wickham.  The family moved to Willows, CA in 1928. Winona went to be with Jesus on February 20, 2021.

Married to Zoyd Brummet in Willows, CA on Feb 17, 1946, they raised their family on a small farm on Pacific Avenue in Willows. Together they built their house and raised chickens, sheep and a steer or two. Daughter Selma was born in July of 1947, followed by Martha in April of 1949. Son Clark was welcomed in July of 1956. The couple began square dancing in Willows in 1957, and continued to enjoy it for the next 45 years.

Winona was a homemaker all her life, enjoying gardening and sewing, teaching her daughters to sew on a treadle sewing machine that belonged to her mother-in-law. She would make her square-dance dresses on that same machine, with all the yards and yards of flounces on the skirts. The family would enjoy the jams and jellies she would can, the fruit grown in their small orchard near the house. She also had a garden that she would can for use throughout the year.

In 1964 the famiy relocated to Paradise, where Zoyd continued his career at the post office, and Winona made a new house into a home. She began quilting and joined a group called The Friday Needlers. She also joined Marie Welch and the All Thumbs Sewing Group, which she enjoyed for many, many years. There were weekend camping trips, with fresh caught trout a special treat. Winona and Zoyd joined the Paradise Ridge Runners square-dance club and traveled the region enjoying dance as often as they could. Son Clark began square-dancing as a youngster, and enjoyed that activity, too. They also danced with the Chico Squares.

In 1971 the couple built a new home on Nelson Lane, doing most of the labor together. There they lived and raised son Clark, and planned for retirement activities.  The couple traveled in their RV many thousands of miles throughout the U.S. and Canada, including several trips to Alaska, where some of the family had homesteaded in the 1950's. Square dancing throughout the U.S. as they traveled, they once drove to Nova Scotia specifically to dance there ! They wore out several pickups and RV's over the next 40 years of travel. Zoyd turned in his car keys in about 2005, and enjoyed life in Paradise from then on.

The house on Nelson Lane was home for them until the Camp Fife destroyed Paradise in 2018. Zoyd passed away in 2014, when they had been married 68 years. After the fire, Winona went to stay with her sister-in-law in Willows until she chose to live in an independent living community in Yuba City, which was her final Home.

Winona was preceded in death by her husband Zoyd; her parents John and Marjori Wickham; her sister Pearl Fletcher and her brother Wesley Wickham.

Winona is surved by daughters Selma (Gary) Lppincott of Chico, Martha (Tom) Dodge of Live Oak, and son Clark (Yan) Brummet of Fernley, NV.
