Obituary for Leroy Shipp

Leroy Shipp, 77, of Oroville, CA passed away on February 24, 2018 at his home while enjoying the peaceful views of his garden and the warmth of his family’s love.  A celebration of Leroy’s life and family will be held at 11 a.m. on March 5, 2018 at the Church of Latter Day Saints located at 2390 Monte Vista Ave., Oroville, CA.  Burial services will follow at 2 p.m. at Sutter Cemetery.

Leroy was born in Yuba City, CA on June 29, 1940 to Violet and Taylor (Buster) Shipp of Meridian, CA.  He graduated Sutter High School in 1958 and received a BA of Social Welfare and Corrections from Chico State University.  Leroy worked as a probation officer and advocate for victims of violent crimes for the County of Butte.  He also worked tirelessly for the inclusion of people with disabilities as productive members of society, including being appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger to both the Area Board II for Developmental Disabilities and State Council for the Developmentally Disabled. 

Raised in a small farming community gave Leroy a deep love of the outdoors so when he was not wandering the hills, he was digging to China in his garden or traveling the USA and world with family.  He loved hunting/fishing, talking about hunting/fishing, hunting dogs, camouflage, breaking shovels and pry bars on the boulders in his garden, strumming on one of his many guitars, and his friends and family - but not necessarily in that order!

Leroy is survived by his wife of 58 years Margaret (Peggy), brother Alan, sister Rose, daughter Cindy, sons Mark, William, and Mathew, grandchildren Holley, Ashley, Travis, Devin, Denea, Alex, Seth, Claire, and Olivia, and six great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Taylor.
