John Allen Nylund, M.D.

OROVILLE, CALIFORNIA—John Allen Nylund, M.D., of Oroville, California, age 80, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at home in his sleep.

John was born in Detroit, Michigan on January 28, 1944, to Margaret (Kessler) and Walter Nylund.  He graduated as valedictorian of his class from Wylie E. Groves High School in Birmingham, Michigan in 1962.  He went to Northwestern University in Evanston, IL for both undergraduate and graduate schools, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine in 1966.  On June 11, 1966, he married Elise Joan Williams.  John and Joan were married for 58 years and had two children, Jared and Jessica.  John interned at Evanston Hospital, completed his radiology residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Wauwatosa, WI, served two years as Chief of Radiology Department at Ellsworth Air Force Base as a Major, and had a career as a Radiologist, retiring from Kaiser Permanente Hospital in South Sacramento, CA in 2003.  

John was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church where he loved sharing his extraordinary gift of singing, also serving as an Elder and Deacon.  His hobbies included volunteering as a Boy Scout Leader and a member of the Oroville Elementary School Board, refereeing Oroville Community Youth Soccer, singing with the Chico State Opera Gala and the Oroville Community Chorus, and holding many lead roles in the Oroville Community Theater Musicals such as Fiddler on the Roof and Oklahoma.  He spent his free time playing guitar, reading, writing poetry, hiking, sailing, canoeing, camping, and fishing.  He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, traveling, and exploring the outdoors.  John was an active member of the Shriners and Masons.

John is survived by his wife, Elise (Joan) Williams Nylund; his son Jared Nylund (Jessica Nylund); daughter Jessica (Nylund) Salt (Rick Salt); his sister Margaret (Nylund) Schreiner; his grandchildren Jackson and Veronica Nylund, Sonja and Evelise Salt; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his father Walter Nylund, his mother Margaret Nylund, and his sister Dianna (Nylund) Bennett.  

A memorial service will be at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, December 27th at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Stan Henderson officiating.  A reception will follow in the church Fellowship Hall. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Trinity Presbyterian Church of Oroville.
