Ellis LeRoy Matthews

Ellis LeRoy Matthews (84) of Paradise, California was a devoted father, smart businessman and pillar of faith in our community. He passed away on June 21, 2018 at the Paradise Hospice House and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Ellis was born on March 19, 1934 to William Henry (Angell) Matthews and Nettie Juline Miller.  As the fifth of six children, he was an amazing brother and devoted son. He attended Yuba City High School where he enjoyed playing basketball and the trumpet.  He also delighted dancers and audiences performing in a band with his brother.

After serving in the army during the Korean War, Ellis served a mission in Western Canada. He later graduated from Brigham Young University and practiced as a Certified Public Accountant in Paradise for over 30 years.

Family was Ellis’ greatest joy. He married the love of his life, Marjorie Light, in 1961.  Together they raised their eight children and taught them to love God and one another.  They delighted in watching their family grow to 39 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  Margie left an unfillable void when she passed away in 2002, but Ellis was secure in the knowledge that families can be together forever.

Ellis was a life-long, faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He faithfully served in many leadership capacities in the church throughout his life and had a great love for his Savior, Jesus Christ.

Ellis is survived by his eight children: Bonnie Phillips, Carla Deaver, Richard Matthews, Suzanne Warren, Reed Matthews, Robert Matthews, Mark Matthews and Melody Harrison. He is also survived by his sister, Arlene Miller, his grandchildren and his great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four siblings: Anna Johnson, Joseph Matthews, Cula Powers and Gerald Matthews.

A viewing will be held Thursday, June 28, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Rose Chapel, 6382 Clark Road, Paradise, CA 95969.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 29, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1045 Buschmann Road, Paradise, CA 95969.  There will be a dedication of the grave immediately following at the Paradise Cemetery.
