Donald Richard Hagen

Donald Richard Hagen, age 81, passed away peacefully at his home in Bangor, California, on June 27, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and the life he built. He was born on January 20, 1945, to Harry J. Hagen and Marie H. Hagen (Notsch).

Donald was raised in St. Joseph, Minnesota, where he graduated from high school before proudly enlisting in the United States Navy. He served honorably as a Gunner's Mate Third Class (GMT3), a role that reflected his mechanical aptitude, dedication, and strong work ethic.

After his military service, Donald made Long Beach, California, his home. There he met the love of his life and lifelong partner, Gale Smith. Together they built a life centered on family, friendship, and community. Donald and Gale welcomed their daughter, Monica, in 1969.

A gifted mechanic with an entrepreneurial spirit, Donald co-owned Don and Tony's Automotive Repair, where he earned the trust and respect of countless customers through his honesty and skill. He later began a long and successful career with the City of Seal Beach, serving as Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance Supervisor until his retirement.

Donald had a lifelong passion for automobiles, especially his treasured 1968 Mercury Cougar, which he enjoyed restoring and maintaining. He was always willing to lend a hand, helping friends keep their business vehicles running and never hesitating to share his knowledge or time with someone in need.

Although California became his home, Minnesota always held a special place in Donald's heart. For decades, he faithfully returned each year to St. Joseph to visit his beloved mother, spend time with the Notsch family, and reconnect with lifelong friends. Those annual trips were a tradition he cherished and continued until just a few years before his passing.

Outside of work, Donald embraced an active Southern California lifestyle. He loved running and riding his bicycle along the Long Beach coastline. He and Gale were a familiar sight taking evening walks through Belmont Heights and spending Saturday nights enjoying local Long Beach establishments, good conversation, a favorite libation, and music from the jukebox. One of his favorite traditions was gathering with friends over a cold beer at Joe Jost's, where laughter and friendship were always plentiful.

Following retirement, Donald and Gale fulfilled a longtime dream by relocating to Northern California, where they built a home near family. There, Donald found immense joy spending

time with his daughter, Monica Keller, son-in-law, Michael Keller, and his beloved grandson, Ethan Keller. He also became an important part of the family-owned Calolea Olive Oil business. Visitors to the orchard knew Donald as the warm, welcoming face of Calolea's farm tours. As the unofficial—and beloved—official greeter, he made everyone feel like family from the moment they arrived.

Donald will be remembered for his quiet generosity, mechanical talents, unwavering work ethic, warm smile, and genuine kindness. He never sought recognition for the many ways he helped others; he simply enjoyed making life a little easier for family, friends, and neighbors. His presence brought comfort, humor, and steadiness to those fortunate enough to know him.

Donald is survived by his devoted life partner, Gale Smith; his daughter, Monica Keller; his son-in-law, Michael Keller; and his cherished grandson, Ethan Keller. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry J. Hagen and Marie H. Hagen (Notsch).

In recognition of his honorable military service, Donald will be laid to rest with United States Navy military honors at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.

Our hearts are broken by his passing, but we are forever grateful for the years we shared with him. We will miss his stories, his smile, his willingness to help, and the love he gave so freely. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of his family, his many friends, and everyone whose lives he touched.

Whenever a visitor arrived at the Calolea Olive Oil orchard, there was a good chance they would be welcomed by Donald's warm smile, kind handshake, and friendly conversation. He had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel like an old friend. Though his voice is now quiet, his kindness will continue to welcome all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Fair winds and following seas, Don. You have served your country, loved your family well, and earned your well-deserved rest. May you rest in eternal peace.
