Alice Frances Bus passed peacefully at home on November 3, 2019 in Sacramento, California. She was a longtime resident of Paradise, California.
Alice is survived by her two children Schelte John “Bobby” Bus ll of Hilo, Hawaii and Judith Ann Mills of Paradise, California, their spouses Shawn Moore Bus and Gary Leroy Mills, and her grandson, Gary Leroy Mills Jr., of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by multiple nieces and nephews.
Born Alice Frances France on November 15, 1928 in Zanesville, Ohio to parents Carl Leslie France and Mary Louise (Starrett) France. She was raised on her family’s farm in Zanesville and was the youngest of six children. Preceded her in death are her siblings Mary, Paul, Ray, Emmett and Wilber. The family attended St. Luke Lutheran Church.
After graduating from South Zanesville High School in 1946, Alice studied nursing at Milwaukee Hospital and obtained her 3 year nursing degree in 1950. After her schooling, she and a friend moved to Sacramento, California to start her nursing career. Alice worked as a Registered Nurse at Mercy General and Mercy San Juan Hospitals from 1950-1974.
On August 26, 1955, Alice married Schelte John Bus Jr. at St. Lukes American Lutheran Church in Sacramento, California. She remained by his side until his passing in 2005. They were married 49 years. The family attended Bethel Lutheran Church where Alice was active in teaching children’s Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She is remembered for her beautiful piano playing.
In 1974, Alice moved with her family to Paradise, California where she worked as a Registered Nurse at Feather River Hospital until her retirement in 1987. Alice was a member of the Paradise Alliance Church and served as the Church librarian for over 30 years. She enjoyed watching the young families grow in the church and in their faith. She mentored the youth in the love of books and the joy of reading. Alice enjoyed Bible devotions, sewing, crochet, cross stitch, reading, journaling, gardening and visiting with her neighbors during walks. Later in life, Alice enjoyed coloring and jigsaw puzzles.
On November 8, 2018, as Paradise was engulfed by the Camp Fire, Alice fled her home and returned to Sacramento where she spent her final year with daughter and family. Alice attended The Sanctuary- Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Woodland, California where she was welcomed with open arms.
Alice’s love for Christ and family was evident in her daily life. She held a particularly warm spot in her heart for her grandson, Gary Jr. She was laid to rest next to her husband, Schelte, on November 7, 2019 at the Paradise Cemetery.
Graveside service was officiated with love for Alice by Pastor Dave Bruns from the Paradise Alliance Church.
Alice will be missed for her smile, humor and dedication in everything she did in life.
