Herbert Lewis Ott
September 14, 1924 - December 17, 2019
Herbert Lewis Ott was born September 14, 1924 in Los Angeles, CA. He was greeted by his Savior in heaven on December 17, 2019.
Entering the Navy at 17, Herbert served in WWII from 1942 until 1945 surviving the abandoning of his sinking ship, the U.S.S. Wasmuth in the Aleutian Islands. He was an electrician's mate in charge of the gyrocompass. Needing men experienced in the gyrocompass, the Navy called him back for service in the Korean War from 1950-51.
Herbert met and married Glenda (Kerr) in 1972. Married for 47 years, they made a good team, enjoying many adventures together.
Herbert was a lifelong Lutheran who faithfully and lovingly served his Lord his whole life. Serving as Elder for many years and also as a Youth Counselor, his favorite time of service was in Yosemite camping with Glenda and the teenagers. These Christ-loving teens now grown, prayed him though many serious health issues in his later years and are part of many wonderful memories and current prayer warriors. He was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Paradise.
Retiring from L.A. Department of Water and Power in 1982, Glenda and Herbert moved to Paradise. He was happiest when sitting watching the wildlife from their deck. He loved traveling the world together and also traveled for many years in their 5th wheel.
Though he had overcome so many health problems in the past, losing everything in the Camp Fire and the subsequent living conditions were just too much for his body to handle though he fought very hard. But he knew God was with us the day of the Fire, leading us out to safety and that He remained by our side. Though he was quiet, he was an example of faith in action. Always ready to help with a generous heart, and a sometimes rather sheepish smile, he was a good man who was loved and will be remembered with love by many.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma, and brothers, Melvyn, Robert and Donald. He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Glenda; son David Ott, wife Kathy ;daughter Lynn Ott;and daughter Kathy Harder, husband Brian: grandchildren Nicole Steigelman, husband William; Matthew Ott, wife Allison; Ashley Colivas and Nikolas Colivas and great grandsons Lucas and Eddie Steigelman and Tucker Ott; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on January 6th at 11:00 at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 7126 Skyway in Paradise. In lieu of flowers you may consider a donation in memoriam to Our Savior Lutheran for a stained glass window in our future rebuilt Paradise church.
"Fight the good fight with all thy might.
Christ is thy strength and Christ thy right.
Lay hold on life, and it shall be
thy joy and crown eternally."
